Medication Management

Did you Know?

In 2010, Medi-CareFirst's MTM participants saved an average of $157.83 on drug costs.

Medication Management, also called Medication Therapy Management (MTM), is a free program designed to help you get the most benefit from your drugs. It may also help you save money.

All members of Medi-CareFirst’s BlueRx (PDP) plans can use this program. Members who are taking several drugs, or members with chronic conditions, may benefit the most from this program.

Through the MTM program, you can meet with a specially-trained MTM pharmacist. These pharmacists will perform a Comprehensive Medication Check-Up, asking you about things like:

  • Do you take two or more drugs that have the same purpose?
  • Do you understand how to use your drugs?
  • Should any of your drugs not be taken together?
  • Are you taking vitamins or over-the-counter drugs that could affect your prescription drugs?
  • Are there ways you can save money on your drugs?

Prescriber Consultation

The MTM pharmacist will speak with you and your doctor to fix any problems they find with your medications.

Non-Prescription Consultation

Using non-prescription (over-the-counter) drugs rather than prescription drugs can save you time and money. Your MTM pharmacist will meet with you and tell you which over-the-counter drugs work well, and what conditions they treat.

Benefits of the MTM Program

  • Personal review of your current drugs
  • Advice on selecting over-the-counter medicines when needed
  • Review of all new drugs that you start taking
  • Follow-up call to make sure you are not having problems with any new drug

How to Use the MTM Program

  • Find an MTM pharmacist by calling Claims Customer Service at 1-800-693-1434 (TTY/TDD: 1-800-693-0765), 24 hours a day/7 days a week. You may also find one in the back of your Pharmacy Directory (476KB, 90 pgs.) PDF - opens in a new window .
  • Call the pharmacist to schedule your review. The review will take about 20-30 minutes.
  • If your regular pharmacist also participates in the MTM program, please make your appointment with him or her.
  • Take all of your medicines with you to your MTM review. That includes all non-prescription medicines, vitamins or other supplements. Also take a list of any other medicines that you have taken recently.
  • Your MTM pharmacist will work with you and your doctors if any changes are suggested. No change will be made unless you and your doctor both agree.
