I need a supplemental health plan.

What do I need to know before choosing a Medigap plan?

A Medigap, or Medicare Supplement Insurance policy is health insurance sold by a private insurance company to fill the “gaps” in the Original Medicare Plan coverage.

Insurance companies can only sell “standardized” Medigap policies. These Medigap policies must all have the same benefits so you can compare them easily.  Generally, when you buy a Medigap policy you,

  • Must have Medicare Part A and Part B.
  • Will have to pay the monthly Medicare Part B premium.
  • Will also pay a premium to the Medigap insurance company.

A Medigap policy only covers one person. If you and your spouse both want Medigap coverage, you must each buy separate Medigap policies.
