Increased Health Risks Associated with Meridia (Sibutramine Hydrochloride)

The FDA has notified health care professionals to stop prescribing sibutramine to patients with cardiovascular disease including:

  • A history of coronary artery disease (e.g., heart attack, angina)
  • A history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)
  • A history of heart arrhythmias
  • A history of congestive heart failure
  • A history of peripheral arterial disease
  • Uncontrolled hypertension (e.g., > 145/90 mmHg)

These patients face an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

Patients currently using sibutramine should talk with their physician to determine if continued use of this product is appropriate for them.
